My answer:
Dear whoever you are,
I don't know who you are and how you can accuse me of plagiarizm. I do,
however, know that I have written every single word on my own. I have
composed it while sitting in my translation class, shortly after I created
my mailing list FFN-Slashers-Unite where I posted the first draft and
improved it with the suggestions of my fellow listsibs. It was later posted
on ff.net. I don't know you friend and I don't know when he's supposed to
have written this, but whatever he did, he either wrote the same thing as
me, coincidentally, or he copied it from me. I am free from guilt and don't
really see any need explaining it to you.
You talk about plagiarizm and yet you try to take my own achievements away
from me. This is really funny. Is this some new kind of flame? If so, I'll
make sure to include it in my updated version.
Although, I am really curious. When did your friend allegedly write this
piece? I'm really curious. Maybe he has some magical link to me, then PLEASE
tell him to write me. Otherwise I'm sure I can prove that this list has been
published on my ML already earlier. If not, then this was a huge coincidence
and I am just as amazed as you. I could even scan the page from my notepad
for you where I drafted the 10 Steps.
Whatever it is, I have no idea. Please refrain from accusing me any further,
because I really don't see any reason for this. Your friends may be upset,
but maybe your friend copied it from me. *shrugs*
Oh, and it's cool you know Oscar Wilde, how witty, no?
So long

and my answer
Okay,
whatever it is that's going on here, I can't make heads and tails of it. I
can say for myself that I have with the best knowledge and integrity of my
reputation as a writer written every single word of my 10 Steps personally,
without ever having read anything closely resembling this. I was not in the GW
fandom at that time and I am not now. I like GW, but I've never been
subscribed to any ML.
I have NEVER read a 10 Steps before. I formulated every single line myself.
I changed it several times. I had 14 first, decided that 10 was better and
merged several points to one. I had a whole string of exclamation points
first, then someone on my ML (Crazy Ivan) suggested to snip them, so I added
the [major snippage]. I spontaneously added the "Flame away" before posting
it on ff.net. Every single word is my own achievement, including the
spelling mistakes and all that. So, I'm sure you can understand that I do
not believe this is a coincidence. Period.
I don't know what you're up to or if this is a huge misunderstanding. I, for
one, can prove step by step how I wrote this, with whom I wrote this, where
I posted it the first time and so on. My mind is free from guilt. Maybe your
friend is fooling you. I honestly don't know what it is.
To repeat: I DID NOT plagiarize anyone. I DID NOT paste my name under
somebody else's achievement. I would NEVER do that. I'm an intelligent,
creative person, I earn my money being one, I really don't need somebody
else's ideas. If you try me I can be jut as saracastic at any other given
moment. So even if I deleted the 10 Steps right now (which I won't), I could
be writing equally as funny at the blink of an eye. I realize this sounds
terribly arrogant, but this is how I'm going to make clear that I'm not
going to accept any accusation like that. I'm free from guilt. Period.
I cannot believe that I should have managed to have written something that
equals a previously published work bit by bit. How likely is that? So,
whatever it is, I don't know the answer. Maybe you like to make fun of me
and want to cause me a headache. You managed that, so you can stop now. Next
time, flame me, because then I can laugh about it and retaliate in a way I
am used to.
Silver
And I added:
Okay, enough of this business.
Please subscribe to my ML FFN-Slashers-Unite and look at this message
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FFN-Slashers-Unite/message/46
It was posted November 21st 2000, the first version of my 10 Steps. Looks
like this is the 6 or 7 months you were talking about. Funny, no? Looks like
your friend plagiarized me. Unless you can give me similiar proof (and I
don't mean some forwarded message, even I could change the date of that), I
will ignore this whole business and just regret that your friend is a
plagiarizer who's causing ME a migraine.
Thank you.

I cannot believe that I should have managed to have written something that
equals a previously published work bit by bit. How likely is that? So,
whatever it is, I don't know the answer. Maybe you like to make fun of me
and want to cause me a headache. You managed that, so you can stop now. Next
time, flame me, because then I can laugh about it and retaliate in a way I
am used to.

Okay, enough of this business.

Thank you.

Silver posted on her livejournal how you were accusing her of plagarizing the "10 Steps to Successful Flaming." I'm her friend, and I am absolutely certain this must be a misunderstanding of some kind because plagarizing is one thing I could never see Silver doing. She is an excellent writer -- she doesn't need to plagarize to gain a reputation. If you accuse her of taking the "10 Steps," you're going to need some concrete proof (the archives of the mailing list in question, or something like that.) I was *there* when Silver posted the "10 Steps" on FFN-slashers-unite and again when she posted it to fanfiction.net. I would advise you to think very carefully about your accusation and come up with an absolute way to prove that your friend wrote the 10 Steps before Silver. Otherwise your accusation is groundless and only intended to hurt my friend. And amazingly enough, I am just as loyal to *my* friends as you are to yours. Give it some thought, look into *yourself* and *you* just might see something you don't want to see.
Oooooooh...

Date: 2001-06-11 10:28 am (UTC)This is rather like detective work, no? ^_^ I wouldn't stress about it. I'm sure it'll all work out. Perhaps, like I said earlier, it's just a misunderstanding. Maybe he actually said, "I found this 10-Steps on another ML and wanted to share it..." and his friend just missed that part. *shrugs*
I hope so, at least.
