legal name changes take forever. i speak from going through the struggle with a friend of mine, when he decided to become she, legal-name-wise. he'd always considered himself a her. heh.
would it be totally out of line if i made a post that said "having a partner is about love; marriage is about social and economic issues".. though it's true having a partner is about social issues, but if there's no promise of legal marriage it is sort of a deterent for people who get into relationships just to be married.
or maybe i should just post "relationships are screwed. nothing's about love anymore."
I think legal name change is a lot more of a hassle when it comes in unison with a gender adjustment. Usually it isn't that much of a trouble. At least in the US, from what I heard. Around here it's next to impossible to do it. First off you need quite solid reasons for changing your name, someone needs to accept those and then you need to pay a horrendous sum for all your legal documents to be changed x_X;. Here, I'd say it's almost easier for transgendered people to get a name change than for others who just don't like it.
And heh... I don't know if this innocent little meme is the right forum to do that sort of thing. Personally I'm not that much into marriage either, but there are people who really want to and can't and they should get a chance to. I don't think we should let cynism get into the way of that, clear and simple.
