I just answered to [livejournal.com profile] laurenia's LXG comments and thought I might as well post them here as well. Helps me remember my thoughts about it later and saves me the work of having to strike up a post of my own (which I never did... lazy me XD)

Anyway...

Dorian Gray: Not pretty enough
I thought that too at first, but then I was convinced. I mean he WAS pretty sexy. I don't get the Townsend thing either. I hated him as Lestat. And I wasn't too happy with him as Gray either, but in the movie I was won over. I saw him as the matured Gray. He was no longer that spoiled brat, but instead a very suave and experienced man. I just luuuuuuurved the way he fought. You know? ALl cool and sleek, just mowing them down left and right, completely unbothered. He's not my favorite character, but I think he hit the spot.

Dorian's picture: Not scary enough
Absolutely! The picture was supposed to reflect all his sins and the ugliness of his soul and then all it was was some odd CGI Photoshop enhanced piccy. Not cool. Also, I thought it was a bit over the top to make he die on the spot when he as much as looks at it O.o. I mean, the book has been a while, but I seem to remember that the painting needs to be "killed" in order to kill him?

The Nautilus: Nemo is really compensating something, isn't he?
XD! Well, I was rather amused about the shape and all. I mean, many people build big things. But there's like... no way in hell that thing would stay upright! No matter which alternative universe, unless you override the laws of Gravity -.-;.

Mary-Mina: Argh, everybody loves her, she's got all the good vampire powers and none of the bad ones... seriously, standing in broad daylight in the African desert and I didn't see the ring of Amara... eep, wrong fandom.
Weeeeeeeeell, she's the Stoker Dracula type and those can walk at broad daylight without troubles, they just don't have special powers (and other restrictions). And they need to rest in their native soil or something.

Anyway, I think I'll go for Dr.Jekyll/Mina and Tom/Dorian.

I thought Tom/Quatermain worked, too. And Skinner/Quatermain ("Always wear clothes in my presence!!!" or so XD). Actually, Skinner/anyone, because he's really sexed up O.o. I second the Jekyll/Mina. Tom/Mina eventually, too. Hm... Nemo/Quatermain wouldn't be too bad either. Ah, the possibilities...

Maybe Moriarty/Quatermain because this is the only reason I can imagine why on earth Quatermain didn't shoot him when he had the chance about 2442525454 times in the movie.
XD! God, yes! Not only could he have shot him, he DID hit him! In the shoulder, in the chest, here, there... and it never seemed to bother him much next time you say him O.o.

Laurie's pet theories: Tom Sawyer is part phoenix! *nodsnods* He escapes from two burning buidings with as much as a scratch. And without any explaination.
Hmmm, interesting!

The thing that bothered me the most was that you get zero character background, or in rare cases, only minimal. Most of them are blank slates with an established bio and that's it. No depths, no development. There are so many dilemmas they've brought up and none of them was really solved. The whole Jekyll/Hyde situation for one. Or... Nemo's past. Basically everything about Mina o.o. Like, she lost her husband obviously. Is here anything she feels about it? Tom is totally blank. He doesn't even have a dilemma. Dorian they expect you to know. If you don't, then you'll just think he's some vain immortal. Come to think of it, you only hear some stuff about Quatermain, and even that is very superficial. OOoh and Skinner! Forgot him! XD! HE is the uber-blank spot. I mean, if you know the H.G. Wells story you know his, but since they even changed the name it's really kinda tricky, so all you know is that he's invisible and that he stole it. That's not satisfying either.

*sighs* Maybe I should just stop expecting deep characterization and great plot from such movies ^_^;;. Seriously, the plot can be summarized in two sentences. Maybe one... heh... BUT, the movie kicked ass. Been drooling over it since May, so I'm just insanely relieved it didn't totally suck. I would have been heartbroken. ;_;

Oh and... abusers of Holmes canon must die... -_-
