It's just frustrating! So I'm developing this new Harry Potter series that I want to write and whereas I feel like doubting this idea and my own skills several times a day, I mostly think it's a really good idea. It's carefully thought and sketched out, with background and everything.

I've been writing fanfiction for 3 years now and I have never ever written a Mary Sue. Not ever. People say that inexperienced writers write Mary Sues because they can't come up with anything better. I heartily agree. I hate Mary Sues with a passion. I've promised myself never to write a Mary Sue.

Now, there's this story idea and for once in my life I was thinking about putting an original character in. I've never done that before and this time it would actually make sense. But I just know that people will think that it's a Mary Sue. But it's not! It's a he and he's nothing at all like me, nor do I wish I was him!!

It's troublesome. I have no experience with HP het fics that are apparently the source of most self-insertions and Mary Sues. I never read that stuff, so I can't tell what people don't want to read about. I've read through the HP Mary Sue Litmus test and I score pretty okay, but there are some facts that I know are a MS-nono that sorta accord with my character. But they are not meant like that! Thing is, the character I plan to pair him up with just has no suitable partner in the universe I created around him and the reason I'm going to kill him off later on is just to bring it all back to canon again! Is that bad? Is that a Mary Sue then?

I am very confused now. Meimi said that he won't be a Mary Sue if he's interesting and people like him. Thia, however, my treasured beta and brainstormer, said - or at least I think she did - that my OC would have to be flat and insignificant to prevent the MS-ness.!

How now brown cow? I'm absolutely confused. I don't want a MS, I don't want people to think it was one and I don't want to do what everybody does. Argh! I wish somebody could help me out! The whole confusion makes me want to can the whole crap right away, take out the OC completely. But then, it's pointless. The whole story. Thus, I can dump the idea with it....

*sniffle*

I wish someone would tell me if it's okay or not...

if your OC is a mary sue, then rufus (caesar fic) will have to be a mary sue, as well.. whenever i get it typed up.. *yawns lazily*.. sometime... i honestly dont think all OC's inserted into a 'fandom' are mary sue's. and ieven if it -was- a mary sue, it makes next to no difference when its a good writer.. they make it good. like you, silver.. ;) hehe.

Not all Mary Sues are bad...

Not all Mary Sues are bad. Some are pretty good. You just have to be careful with how you use them.

In fact, one of my favorite characters in fiction is a Mary Sue :o)
