I can't believe 9ug is doing this to me. I was so content with this webhost and now this. They've introduced the most horrific banners, huge on top of each page, even on elements of framesets!! I cannot bear looking at it. I've now broken all the links until I know what's going on. What can I do? They charge 7$ a month for such a crappy service. This is just unfair. Just when I was starting to get regular visitors and all... *cries*

I just want to die...

Ugh. This makes me quite angry. That has to be the ugliest friggin banner I've ever seen. I'm seriously considering using my Yahoo/GeoCities account. At least the pop up thing there is just in the corner. I can't afford to pay somewhere to host my site, and I can't imagine someone wanting to take me in. I'm in the middle of a redesign, and I don't want to continue with it if I don't have a real home.

I love Geocities.

It had some screwy problems a couple of years ago, but now it runs very smoothly. The little pop up is the best ad system out there, it opens on the same page as opposed to other pop ups that actually open in a new window, and it is simple and easy to get rid of.

And it's of course no where near as ugly as those huge banners of frames places like Homestead have >_<. The courner pop ups don't actually take away from the page design, those damn banners do.

*grin*

That said, I'm a bit biased. I've been with Geocities for roughly four years now :)

I have a bunch of accounts there, and from the work I've done with it, I'm not completely hating it. Nothing can be worse than the ugliness of Homestead or Xoom/NBCi, and it's for the most part reliable. I might as well see if I can get an account with a somewhat acceptable name...

ive told silver this, but i guess i need to tell everyone else too.. my page is hosted by a place called eccentrica.org. (bannerless!) they endorse free speech, and the only thing that isnt allowed is hate sites.. you get 1 meg to start with, and can ask for more (up to 500megs).. it is run by real people rather than machines, so i suppose that is why i like it so much. the only bitch is you can only upload one file at a time.. it is web based, so no ftp.

Coolness. The one file at a time thing kinda sucks, but I could get over that. That seems worth checking out. Thanks for the info! :)

Ouchies.

It looks like a Tripod page >_<

Suggestion: on most banner hosts, you can actually delete the banner code in the html of each page, and instead of getting the banner, you instead get pop ups.

I don't know if it works on your host, and it's really the lesser of two evils. *BUT* it doesn't effect the layout of the page, which is always a big plus.

I still maintain that Geocities is God, not to mention free :)

Well...

The problem with geocities is that they only have such a low amount of bandwidth, a crappy URL and they oppose slash :-/. If you host your stories there you could get deleted any time. *sighs*

This is just awful.

Btw, love your userpic! Fake, eh? *_*

What?!

They oppose slash? I've had slash on them for years ... can you provide me with some form of link?

*smirk*

Not Fake, Sailor Moon - my original yaoi couple ;) Nephrite and Jadeite, there are absolutely beautiful doujinshi's of the two. There used to be a fantastic one online, but the damn site closed down.

I miss them actually, I really should write something on them, haven't for years ...

hm?

Well, I'm a coward and they don't allow pornographic material and you know those folks. A bit explicit slash is enough for them to go crazy. Of course they don't go around looking, but when someone wants to diss you they just drop geocities a line. :-(

As for the pic, I could have sworn it's Fake! That hairdo's supposed to be Neph's?? No way! Since when does he have those fringes? Do you know who's the mangaka by any chance? ^_^

damn, damn, damn ...

I know it, I have one of their doujinshi hidden somewhere ...

But damn if I can remember it :)

Run a couple past me, and I'll say yes ot no.

Eeeeeh... Silver has a rotten memory for names.

Weeeeeell, IF it was the mangaka of Fake then it would be Sanami Matoh. The nose got me thinking, but on second thought, maybe it's not her... hmmm.

Alternate Hosting option: Slashcity

Hi Silver!

I'm Cameron, and I just read your livejournal. I'm not an administrator on Slashcity, but I highly recommend them.

New users are being charged US$7 a month, and you get 50MB of space, 2 Gigs of data transfer/month (have no idea what that means), and a free web-based e-mail account corresponding to your username. Your username and your URL will be different. For example, username: carrie, URL:flyaway

Your username and e-mail will be carrie, and your URL will look like this

http://flyaway.slashcity.com (or .net or .org, your pick)

There are absolutely no banners, no popups, no ads, nothing. Plus the admin there respond as soon as they read your mail, and they're very friendly, efficient and helpful.

If 50MB isn't enough, they have other, more expensive plans for 100, 200 and 500MB. The more expensive plans usually offer you URLs like

http://www.flyaway.com

I have my website hosted there because of fears that I might get my account deleted for 'inappropriate' material, and I've been pretty happy with them. ^_^

thankee!

Hey Cam!

Thanks for the input. As a matter of fact I already checked out slashcity. It's an option. But damn... 7$ is a lot for a poor student. But I'll think about it. Right now I'm just feeling like sulking and pitying myself. *sniffle*

I don't know about that bandwidth stuff. How do I know how much bandwidth I'd have and what happens if I have too much? o_O

Ah... *sighs* I need do get a credit card of my own. It's so embarrassing when my Dad gets to see the statements before he whacks me to pay for my crap! hahaha

Imagine that... "Eh... whuzzat, slashcity...?"

*?_`*

Well, both my parents know about it, and yes, it's my Dad who's paying for it. ^_^ Open-mindedness... such bliss. Heh.

Envy.nu sounds like a pretty okay place, except that they say no porn, soft or not, is allowed. No banners and popups, but I headed over to Slashcity because of the safety ^_^; No way is my site disappearing for porno no da! ^_^

Hurray!

Hey, I got myself an account as Slashcity! *_* I just don't know how to upload... can you help? I'm feeling really stupid. How do I configure the ftp-program? Where is this infamous page with oh so much info?? I didn't find it! All I found was this lame FAQ and my personal page or so which only told me that I had used 0% of my 50 megs. Geez...

HELP!!! ?_`::

I've had no problems with them.

They are free, and have NO BANNERS at all.

Take a look, anyway.

But ...

I've been with envy for awhile now and while I enjoy their free services, they are not always reliable. Their downtimes have been extensive in the last couple of months. Also, the 20 MB might be a problem for someone who wants to post artwork etc. And they don't have FTP, have they? I don't particularly care since I'm not using it anyway, but many people see that as a flaw.
On the positive side, they are ad free and you get a lovely addy http://username.envy.nu/

All I can say is that I don't use FTP, 20 mb is plenty of space for me, and that I've had no problems with them being down...

Just my experience.
