RESULTS OF YOUR ADULT ADD QUESTIONNAIRE

You scored a total of 66.

You appear to be suffering from moderate to severe attention and concentration difficulties, often associated with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. People with similar scores often experience difficulty concentrating on a single task, or paying attention in meetings, discussions, or staying 'on task.' These symptoms appear to be causing you some impairment and distress in your normal, everyday functioning. You would likely benefit from the attention of your physician or a trained mental health professional for further evaluation and a more accurate diagnosis and treatment.

70 and up is Adult ADD.

Hm... I mean, I know I'm having troubles concentrating and staying with one task and boring discussions and readings don't hold my attention very long, but I don't really think it's ADD. My girlfriend has that and that's something completely different. I mean, when I like something, I can stick with it for hours and I'm very patient when I have to wait.

Ah well, it's not a diagnosis anyway! ^_^

Wanna try anyway?

FWIW, I don't think you have ADD either, honestly, but something these type of diagnostic questionnaires (diagnostic in the disclaimed sense, of course *g*) don't tell you about ADD is that, believe me, people with ADD, even with severe ADHD, *can* functionally concentrate on a single task for extended periods of time, provided that they are sufficiently interested in it. My brother has had *severe* ADHD since he was a baby, but his ability to play video games is truly amazing (in terms of both his skill and the length of time he can play). The periods of time for which you have to concentrate with that are in multiple short bursts, so he can do it. (I, OTOH, can't. Bores me to tears and I can't pay attention to it long enough at all. Not to mention the lack of hand-eye coordination.)

Many people with ADD also are quite intelligent, and they can compensate for their short attention span in other ways (filling in subconsciously what 'must have been said' in a lecture or conversation, for instance). But many others, of course, even those of above average intelligence, don't manage to learn the same coping skills as children and settle into patterns of academic failure (as did my brother, despite being *very* smart, despite everyone's efforts to help him, despite medication, etc.). But absolutely one of the most frustrating things about dealing with kids with AD(H)D is their seeming ability to concentrate well enough when it's about something they're interested in. ("You could sit and watch a two hour movie; how come you can't do an hour of homework?")

AD(H)D is rampant in my family, btw. My brother's is severe; both of my parents' mild. My father's brother also has moderate ADD, as do, by report, at least two of his kids. I have mild ADD too, but have good coping skills. Lectures are *torturous* though, 'cause I just *cannot* pay constant attention during them. And it's one of the reasons I have problems driving -- I won't realize that I've stopped paying attention right away, I forget to do things like check to make sure there aren't other cars when turning or changing lanes...

And while writing this one comment, I got up 7 times, checked my email twice, listened to the news on tv, and fidgeted the entire time I was sitting down. My score? 107...
