Aftermath of Last of the Timelords
Jul. 1st, 2007 01:53 pmI think by now everyone's agreed that the episode pretty much sucked. I don't even feel the urge to rewatch it because it was just a messy load of copycat themes borrowed from all over the place. And I can't help but feel embarrassed au lieu John Barrowman for banging the drum so much beforehand, saying a gasp will go through Britain at the final revelation and it will be so shocking and OMG! I think that gasp probably rather was one of "... WTF?!?"
Seriously, I'm usually a really positive person when it comes to my favorite shows. I tend to like everything at first and only accept later that it might have sucked a bit. I did like LotT when I watched it. It was interesting enough. Sure, Jack didn't nearly get as many lines as he should have, nor did his character actually have any real purpose there other than getting killed repeatedly (which we didn't get to see, boooo), but it was nice. The Tinkerbell scene was cheesy but it did make me tear up a little bit. I am a sucker for that, I know. But in the end it did leave a stale feeling of WTF. Not just the Jack thing. Not even going into that. But why did they even bother to bring the Master back only to waste him on such a lame plotline and stage exit? Just not choosing to regenerate... bleh. That was lame. And really, all there was to defeating him was saying "There's no place like home" three times or what? Double-bleh.
I was endlessly relieved to find that none of the rumors flying around turned out to be true. So Jack isn't the Doctor's son, or a Timelord, or the time-fucked, paradox 13th regeneration of the Doctor or any of that. I would have hated that. But what the shit was that with the Face of Boe? Now that makes no sense any way you turn it. I don't care how much you're going to argue, that is NOT brilliant writing. That is RTD randomly pulling something out of his ass to make it a shock. He probably looked at his excel-file with Doctor aliens of the future going, "Hm... what can I use to make Jack moar speshul? Oh yes, that one's good!". Laaaaaaaaame.
So I guess I'm going to do what fans have been doing for decades. I'm going to ignore this. My primary fandom is TW and for that it's utterly irrelevant. I mean, Jack doesn't even know the fate of FoB. He just sorta threw it in. Either, he doesn't know and so we'll never hear anything about this in TW again (thank God, and I really hope the fanfic writers will realize this), or Jack does know and is merely yanking the Doctor's chain and it's all a joke. And I don't care whether RTD confirmed this in the podcast. It doesn't matter. If it's not cast in iron in the main show it's not canon. The end. We're taking the examples of George Lucas and Joss Whedon there. Even IF it's cast in iron, it can always change. So, whatever! Not listening, lalalalala.
Still I'm feeling a little put off now. I guess that was bound to happen. It's this coming down from the high of waiting for the finale, getting all worked up over it etc. Apart from the fact that I shall never utter again I wasn't terribly jossed just yet. With the entire year having been reversed as well (THANK GOD) there will be no news of Jack on the run and we'll be spared all the retarded Himalaya plots and there'll just be "Jack is gone" left. The only question is, how long was he gone? (actually wait, I just realized that one's still intact! Ick! Oh well...)
I really suck at working out timelines. I just do. I don't think he was just gone a couple of days. When's the election day in the UK? That could be a clue. Regardless of that, we still don't know how much time exactly passed between the aftermath of the Master stuff and them standing there at Cardiff. Well, if anybody wants to explain it to me, please do. I just hate timelines...
Also, can we please not have tons of fics now dealing with Jack being traumatized after a year of captivity and torture? Jack just doesn't strike me as the type of guy to get traumatized easily. He's experienced so much shit in his life, he's lived so many years... I really doubt that would faze him all THAT much. Just my not so humble opinion of course.
Okay, I think I'm done now. Needed some therapeutic ranting, I guess. Feel free to cheer me up. Right now I'm kinda put off writing which is annoying.

Date: 2007-07-01 08:11 pm (UTC)Oh, word. Instead let's have lots of Doctor/Master AUs where the Doctor takes him on the TARDIS and they play odd couple.
