As you guys know I like political cartoons and I read them regularily. Naturally the cartoonists are running havoc right now with London. And since most of the cartoonists featured on that site are American you can already guess what kinds of cartoons you're going to see. The US is so good at pathos. Surprisingly, some were really good, too. I've made a selection of cartoons that caught my interest. Some I found very funny, despite the nature of the affair. A lot of them I found really really annoying, dripping with Americanocentric pathos and patriotism. Some were very true... Feel free to disagree with my selection.

Ya know... I don't know what to think about the bombing. When I heard I was like omigod and called all my friends to see if their family members are okay. But I wonder... will the Brits have such a thirst for revenge as we (Americans) have had? I really don't think so. Will this event convince the "nonbelievers?" Now that it's happened to them, on their soil how will things change? The next few months are going to be very interesting. I know I don't post to your lj a lot, but i love reading you for things like this. What do you think is going to happen?

But I did like the last cartoon one you posted.
(I don't get this whole, "there there Britain, we understand...but we told you" kinda vibe i'm getting. Grrrrrrrr... Why can't we just mourn with them?)

Yes this is the main reason why this annoys me. It's so belittling of this tragedy. Like "Oh what are you whining about! See?? WE had it much worse!" Very annoying.

I think England is going to keep on doing what they always did. This isn't the first time they've been the victim of terrorism, so it's not like it's a huge change in their lives. Plus, they know how to deal with it and refuse to bow to it. Most things haven't been canceled (such as the Formula 1 race this weekend) and everyday life was only halted for a moment. Security will increase again, that's for sure, they will be more careful and aware of risks again, but apart from that life will go on.

And don't worry about not commenting a lot, it's nice to hear from you when I do. ^_^

Oh I love that last one. Like you said, really nice. =)

Yesterday was pretty scary for me, seeing as both my mom and my sister live in London. But luckily they're both okay.

Thanks for sharing these, they were fun/interesting to look at.

UGH... the two twin-towersy ones are disgusting! But I also like that sillhouette one. I think the liberty/britannia one could have been a good idea if it was any good.. which it really isn't (perhaps they could be making sweet sweet symbolic lesbian love? I don't know. That would definately be *my* version..).

Thanks for posting these, they're really interesting

I really dislike the twin tower ones because they compare things that cannot be compared. It's just different. And you can't counterbalance one misery against another. This is also why I was annoyed at the Liberty / Britannia one. Maybe I misunderstood it but to me it sounded like "Well what are you crying for, the US went through much worse." Sweet sweet symbolic lesbian loves sounds a lot better though XD;.

I know! And what the fuck does Big Ben have to do with it? It's just distasteful and clumsy. Its trying to make it "9/11 2: THIS TIME ITS IN LONDON." Which is just wrong!

ugh your annoying category make me embarassed I am an American. It's sooo got that feel of superiority to it and... ugh I can't stand that crap.

I like the one with the flag and the winston churchill quote on it, and that last one. those are really nice.

Yes it really does reek of superiority. Very annoying.

Glad you liked the others! ^^

I agree with you on your choice of cartoons. Especially annoying is the one with the two busses upright. =/

Completely random comment, though: I had no idea that Churchill said "Do your worst, we'll do our best." I thought I invented that one. >.>

Heh I know that feeling! When you KNOW you've thought of it yourself, you were sitting on the train, moving the words around, thinking of it and you created it yourself, most definitely. And then you suddenly read it somewhere else and realize someone bigger, smarter, more famous than you already said it like 50 years ago. Very frustrating... LOL.

The Liberty/Brittania one is refering not only to 9/11, but also to The London Blitz. It's still kind of annoying, though.

GAH! That's even more annoying -.-;;;. See, I totally ignored the writing on the shield. Bleh. That fits right into the category with those other cartoons where Hitler said to the terrorists "You should have asked me first. Bombing London will do you no good." >.<;

And I also agree with your annoying choices. America needs to stop poking their noses in and making sure nobody forgets about That Tragedy already. Some of our people need to realize that we aren't the only country in the world being targeted by terrorists.

I am an American citizen, and I won't forget 9/11, but hell, I also take what happened to London and Madrid just as seriously. I hope those two countries handle the solutions a lot better than we did.
