Can anybody explain to me why the Americans called Ruffy "Luffy" in the English One Piece version? O.o;

It might be the translators being too literal - since there aren't any Ls in Japanese, a lot of times in loan words (like Ruffy in this case), the R is assumed to be an L.

Yeah I assumed that, but it annoys the hell out of me >_<. There's no reason to assume his name is Luffy! I'm trying to dig up scans from the original, but I already know how it will be spelled. Personally I think Ruffy makes a lot more sense. Might try to hint at his "rubber" properties. Or maybe I'm just imagining things. I just hate it when names get totally screwed up. By fans also. Like for some reason they change Bikki into Billy, since hey, Bikki doesn't make sense so it has to be Billy -.-.

I don't read/like One Piece, so I can't comment on it much; the best thing though, is to find a picture that has it written in Romaji and not katakana, since hey, it might be Luffy after all ;_; There's a character in Saiyuki who's name is LinLin - they of course say RinRin, and it'd really suck if the translators kept it as RinRin instead fo changing it ;_;

Of course, I refuse to watch the American Saiyuki releases, so there you go XD

argh! translation frustration!

it's like in Dragon Half (one of my fave things ever) - is Mink's friend called Rufa or Lufa?

erm...

I always thought his name was Luffy. It spells it that way on the official merchandise that I've seen. ^_^

If it was all that official it'd be Japanese, wouldn't it? Maybe it's US merchandise?

Yeah, his name really is Luffy. I have a keychain I got in Japan that says "LUFFY'S PIRATES" on it.

Oh, it's really Ruffy?

Odd, i really like One Piece, in all the manga and most of the fansubs i've watched it's been "Luffy" I personally like Luffy better then Ruffy though.

I've seen it as Ruffy, too, though. Could it be that they can't make up their fucking minds? -.-; Geeze... not that I really care, but I hate it when I can't figure out the exact spelling of the name ;_;.

Color me clueless. I have no clue anymore. Personally I think Luffy sounds whimpish, but that's just me. I don't really like One Piece, to be honest. My bro's into it. I dislike the art and the villains are always the same and everytime someone gets into miniscule trouble they've got blood all over their face... Erm yes.

Bleh, I keep seeing Ruffy and Luffy. This is fucking frustrating. Oh well, not that I really care.
