I was just clicking through the channels and saw the end of it. I must say, it's been so long since I last saw it, but it's still so present in my mind. I loved this movie so much, still do. To my great embarrassment I have to admit that I'm not sure if this was a total Disney figment or at least losely based on the Baum books, since I've only read that first book. I seem to remember that there's also an Ozma in the books and the Scarecrow later becomes King of Oz... but I'm not sure.

At any rate, this movie is wonderful. Why do I love it? Because it shows you what happens to people like us, people who have a vivid fantasy, who spend their time making up stories and characters and who feel like these characters were as present as our RL friends. They don't understand us, say we're crazy and lock us away. But just like Dorothy we can't be destroyed. You may lock us away, but you can't lock us out of our brain where all our friends are. Our brain can be a terrible thing sometimes, it's sometimes dark and scary, but a lot of times it's a wonderful place that nobody can take away from us. And all our friends are there, all the time.

Dorothy can see her friends, and they are real. Maybe only to her, maybe they really are. And yet people say she's crazy and they take her to a psychiatric ward where she is involved in mysterious experiments, but her friends save her. As a child I saw monsters and creatures. They were real to me and I still think they will return one day. They had names and personalities and they scared me. They said I was crazy, schizotypal. But no, I'm not. I'm an artist!

This is what makes me love this movie. It tells dreamers like me that it's okay to be that way and you too can end up as a hero, even when people say you're crazy. And nobody can take your fantasies away, ever.
