Okay, so I watched the Oscars completely yesterday. I went to bed just before the Best Achievement in Directing so I was snuggled up nicely to watch the rest.

What can be said about the Oscars? All in all I have to say there have been no surprises whatsoever for me. Basically everyone I thought would win did win, and hardly ever the one I wanted to win. Heh... Like, I really wanted Bill Murray to get the Oscar but I knew Sean Penn was going to get it which is fine of course but Bill Murray isn't very likely to ever get that opportunity again whereas Sean Penn will probably be nominated many times more in the course of his career. So yeah, that would have been nice. And he seemed to be a little sad, too. But Penn held a wonderful acceptance speech and it was very touching, so no regrets. I never really expected Johnny Depp to win and he was being really strange yesterday I thought.

What else... there have been no surprises, no scandals or great things. That's a bit sad. It all went according to plan. Adrien Brody was a little spark in the dark with his mouth-spray action, but other than that it wasn't too spectacular. Charlize Theron was annoying again in her acceptance speech, just like she was at the Golden Globes, but never mind. Lord of the Rings won in ALL the categories nominated in which is extraordinary but all in all I didn't feel like it was as emotional as it could have been. They just kinda walked up, said "kthxbye" and left again. Well, that's how it felt to me anyway. Maybe it's just because I was less than enthused yesterday, who knows.

I'm pleased that Lost in Translation at least received Best Original Writing. Would have been a shame otherwise. Kinda sad Pirates of the Caribbean got nothing at all, but what can you do when you have this all-devouring flame that is LotR up against everyone. Not that I'm not glad for the movies to receive recognition, but it is a problem indeed when you've got one nominee that is so strong that it basically takes away the entire award show. I discussed that with dad today and he thought that once a movie won Best Motion Picture they shouldn't get any other Oscars anymore since it should be understood that when you're Best Motion Picture you're best in everything. But of course that doesn't work quite like that. For one, what if the movie DOESN'T win Best Motion Picture and then wasn't nominated in all the other categories? And then even the best movie still deserves recognition in the other categories. That's just the way award shows work. One gets it, the other ones don't. You can't go about giving out silver and bronze Oscars. That'd totally defeat the purpose.

But yes, it feels like Lord of the Rings and Mystic River ate the Oscars. But at least it's a good movie that's done it and not something lame like Titanic or Shakespeare in Love which both were okay movies but really didn't deserve the hype they received.

Okay, I think that pretty much sums up my thoughts. I said in my on the fly commentary last night (which you really shouldn't read because it's hideous) that I'm pleased beyond words that Billy Crystal is back again. And I liked the opening act which only Billy Crystal can do like that. So, that was nice. I liked Jim Carrey's presentation as well, but then again, I just like him. Period. Same with Robin Williams who grows dearer to my heart every day.

Randomly, it's interesting that Sean Penn and Tim Robbins each won an Oscar. So much for Hollywood blacklisting, eh? Of course you could interpret a whole lot of things into this now. One, did they receive the Oscar to mute all the rumors? Two, are people trying to make a statement with it such as the Academy supports their stern anti-war stance? Or Three, the exact opposite and they just don't want people to notice? Hehe... conspiration theories!

Okay, that's all I can think of for now. Gonna make this entry public for a change to avoid random twats from thinking I've only got shallow things to say lately... LOL.
