Thoughts on class reunions
Nov. 8th, 2003 01:02 amDad just got back from his class reunion. He said it was an utterly depressing experience. He said all they basically talked about was "Who are you again? Oh... okay. And what are you doing? Hm... Got any kids? Grandkids? Okay. ... ... Hm..." Of course, what else would you talk with to people who knew 35 years ago and met every 5 years or so after that? It's just like when you graduate and then go to a 1 Year Anniversary Reunion Partaaaaay!!!! and you go "So, whatcha doing? Still studying. Hm... and what do you want to do later? Dunno, eh? Okay... hmm... .... Want a beer?"
It just makes no sense to meet with people whose only connection with you was that they happened to sit in the same room with you when you were graduating. When you graduate you think "Oh no! These are my bestest friends! We see each other every day and when this won't be anymore I'm gonna miss then a whole bunch!!!" and then half a year passes and you think "Oh geeze, I'm not missing them at all. What's they name again?" The only indication that you really had some sort of friendship going on is when you were and are willing to spend your free time with them as well. And even that won't be a guarantee to everlasting friendship.
Sometimes it's scary to see how easily friends just fade away. Nothing really lasts or has persistence. One day you might meet with someone every day and think you never want to live without them, the next they're just gone for half a year and you wonder where time went. Years seem to pass faster now.
