Telling Kris (yes, [livejournal.com profile] kribban-dear, that's you) about Daniel today. I wanted to share my thoughts here too.

Daniel, one of the finalists of the German version of Pop Idol, says he's bi. Everybody who sees him thinks he's flaming gay. He once mentioned he got lots of love letters, by men too, one of which who wanted to marry him. He said this surprised him since he always had dreamt of a family and children. The way I see him, he honestly doesn't care about a person's gender.

What annoyed me a lot last week was that some tabloid had huge headlines "Daniel's sex lie! His mother reveal: My Danny isn't gay!" And then the article went on how his mother can't imagine her son being gay (duh, he's bi) and she said she's never seen him with boys, thus he can't be bi. And his father (who left the family years ago and only now came back) said he doesn't think his son ever had made sexual experiences with men. And in the SAME article they had a direct comment by Daniel who said "That may well be, but I'm still bi." And the article closed with "So who tells the truth? No one can tell..." >_<

There are so many annoyances in there, I can barely count them.

#1: Many parents have no fucking clue about their children's sexual orientation, so they're certainly no authority on that subject.

#2: Nobody was talking about gay, we're talking about bi. That's a concept most people, especially the media, can't grasp. There's more than just black and white and this seems to confuse a lot of people thoroughly.

#3: Just because you haven't had solid sex with a member of the same sex yet doesn't make you unworthy of being gay / bi. Lots of 17 year olds (that's his age) have never had sex with ANYone and know their sexual preferences. Nobody would doubt a virgin to be heterosexual if he or she claimed it.

#4: They suggest he's only claimed to be bi because he thinks it'll increase his chances to win and will make him look cooler. Only, there have been reports of him in his old job, months ago before all this hype started, where he said - just in the passing - that he likes both boys and girls and his job instructor even said about him "Oh, Daniel hasn't figured himself out quite yet. He likes everyone and that's the nice thing about him."

This is really annoying. Nobody makes such a fuss about Daniel's sexual orientation than the media. Daniel never really mentions it as something important. He just said it in the passing a couple of times, as if it was the most natural thing in the world. Which it is. But the media has a fit over it. Things like that show me that whereas the tolerance for gays certainly has increased over the years, it's still treated as something noteworthy and exotic. And I don't like that at all.
