Ice Age: The Meltdown

So, I went ahead and watched the movie on Tuesday. It was a rather impulsive decision since I saw the program and that it was a special showing. I'm not really sure what to think of it, in all honesty. I definitely liked the first movie a lot better than the sequel. Don't get me wrong. It was definitely funny and entertaining and I'm not sorry for the time and money I've spent watching it, but still... it was lacking.

I mean, the movie barely had any highlights. There were no ups or downs. The plot just moved on. If this was an RPG I'd say the plot had a timer. They needed to get from point A to point B in X time. That's it, basically. That about sums up the plot. Then toss in a bunch of funny animals for good measure and a whole lot of random scenes, voilá, sequel done. There wasn't any innovation about the movie, really. And IMO, that's what a sequel really needs in order to have some justification of existence. That, or it just needs to have enough potential to just continue telling stories out of these people's lives. But that wasn't the case here.

Emotionally, the movie didn't touch me at all. The original was very touching, I felt like sniffling a lot of times. Not so here, really. The most emotional scene was Scrat dying and he's not even really dead! LOL And the so called villains were just as random as the rest and had zero background. They could have been rolling rocks for that matter. They randomly burst out of nowhere, send everyone running for the hills, cause some death and destruction and then disappear again.

As for random scenes... wtf was that with the mini sloths?? That was just totally random. It had no merit to the plot and wasn't even exceedingly funny, either. It's not like sloths were rare or near extinct in the reality of the movie, was it. They already had used that plot bit on Manny. Although I will admit that it was rather touching when all the mammoths walked in through the crack and everyone went "Woooaaaah cool...!" On the other hand, it screams plot hole to me, the whole thing. I mean, HOW much time could have possibly passed between Ice Age 1 and 2? Not realistically of course, but in the reality of the movie. No more than a couple of years (shortest ice age EVAR) and already everyone forgot about how huge and awesome mammoths were and kinda mock Manny wherever he goes? I don't know... STILL! That scene was great. I would have liked some more interaction with them and Manny though.

What else... the singing vultures. What the hell? What was that? What was the POINT of it? And why did they sing a song from "Oliver"? Weirdo. And I kept wanting to knock the oppossums over the head. They were so annoying. The whole movie is one comic relief, what did we need those two fuckers for?!? That scene where they taunt Diego made me want to crawl into the screen and whack them myself. Very disappointed in Diego for not being able to catch them. My cat would have pwnt them, definitely. And Ellie! Don't get me started on HER! She was fucking annoying IMO. Not cute at all. How can anyone be so deluded to think that she is an oppossum??? Batshit insane, I say. And other than her eyelashes and green eyes barely recognizeable from Manny. No wonder she never appears on any merchandise for those exact reasons.

I thought it was funny when Scrat died and stood in front of the "nutty gates". XD That was funny. That's kinda the biggest tragedy of the whole movie, that he never gets his damn nut. In Ice Age 1 he at least got the coconut in the end.

Yeah, I'm very good at ranting, I know. But don't get me wrong, I liked the movie. Enjoyed watching it, don't regret having seen it. But it's not like I can't wait to own it on DVD, or anything. I've just recently rewatched Ice Age 1 and I was practically howling with laughter all the time. That, or wiping off a tear because it was so emotional. Or clutching my seat because it was so thrilling. In Ice Age 2 it was more like "Heh..." most of the time. It was funny, cute character designs, nice animations, but nothing new, really. I liked how everyone seemed to have accepted Sid though. I mean, they still say they hate him and he's annoying, but they're undoubtedly a herde and belong together. It's also cute when Diego saves Sid and gets over his fear for him. Diego is definitely very cool. Manny has a very brief scene where he remembers his family, but that's so fleeting and only hinted at that it's easy to miss. Almost like they went "OH SHIT we've started all this romance stuff, but we kinda need to show that he's still suffering from the loss of his family since that was a big deal in 1 and we can't just be inconsistent, CAN WE?!?" So that felt really odd and sudden. And my loathing for Ellie and her brood were just too big to find anything cute about the end. *twitch* Give me Sid / Diego anytime.

Anyway, that concludes my rather disjointed review. *yawns*

I felt pretty much the same way about the movie - it was cute and funny, but unlike the first one not exactly memorable.

Give me Sid / Diego anytime.

*snickers* Good to hear I'm not the only one! :P
